Five Dialogues for Piano, Movement I is part of a large collaborative project, ten - movements piano cycle, composed by Dmitriy A. Savenko, Ukraine, and Vasiliy G. Medved, USA/Ukraine/Moldova, on the series of watercolors, created by London-based aquarellist, Joe Francis Dowden. Livika Ciolpan performed the miniatures of Dmitry A. Savenko, and Alexandru Prigalo interpreted those of Vasiliy G. Medved. The music of Five Dialogues could be viewed as either a series of two composers' conversations on the subject of Joe Francis Dowden's works, presented in the project or - as a symbolic interplay between the meaningfulness of watercolors' beauty and each composer's musical dedications to it, miniature by miniature. Dear colleagues and friends, I am happy to post the Ablaze Records New Choral Voices (New Classical Series 2023) Three Pieces for Choir A Capella III - The Fall of Snow, the third and last miniature of the triptych, recorded and performed recently in Cincinnati, OH by incredible Coro Volante, Brett Scott, Conductor. Music was inspired by the haiku of Nozawa Setsuko:" Heaven and Earth, Convulsing in the same breath, Let fall a tremendous snow." Classic Haiku Collection Tr. by Yuzuru Miura. This short poem fascinated me because of its very content, that is, the allegorical depiction of, almost, uncontrollable clashes of forces within the men's inner realms. Triptych Three Pieces for Choir was written in 2004 when I studied Composition at Boston University Graduate School with Maestro Theodore Antoniou. Among many valuable compositional aspects that we have worked on and continuously discussed during the class meetings, one posed a particular interest to me, that is, an aspect of creating music of a concise nature, a smaller scale' composition that would require a special kind of creativity from a composer for its successful accomplishment. I was fascinated with the very idea of writing a set of pieces, limited in duration, but – self-sufficient and coherent in their content's complete enfoldment. To attain such an endeavor, we selected three Haiku verses from the Ancient Japanese Haiku Collection, one of which was written by an Anonymous author. Haiku seemed an ideal poetic source for my undertaking, due to its structural economy and exuberance of interwoven poetic allegories. I was working on this exciting project with the hope that, someday, this brilliant, sad, and poignant poetry of the V-VI centuries, rendered within the settings of a choral work, will reach out to the audience once again, so people would enjoy appreciating it today as much as older generations have heard it recited in the past.

Dear friends and colleagues, allow me to share with you Ablaze Records New Choral Voices Vol. VI (New Classical Series 2023) Three Pieces for Choir A Capella I - The Road, performed and recorded by incredible Coro Volante, Brett Scott, Conductor. Music is set on the Japanese Haiku by Mitsune, Collection of a Myriad Leaves, Tanka Poetry of Ancient Japan Tr. by Robert H. Brower: "How sad this road, Covered over with the obscuring snow, Where not a person passes, Where not a trace remains to mark the course Of travel through the world of fading hopes." The thematic poignancy of the haiku and its timeless meaningfulness struck me deeply when I first read these lines, for it addresses life's journey in terms and means that we would recognize and understand today - the same way as it was conceived and conveyed by the poet.
Hello everyone, allow me to share Ablaze Records New Choral Voices Vol. VI (New Classical Series 2023) Three Pieces for Choir A Cappella II - I shall miss you most... - with you. The piece was performed and recorded by the fantastic Coro Volante, Brett Scott, Conductor. Music is set on the Japanese Haiku by Anonymous, Collection of a Myriad Leaves, Tanka Poetry of Ancient Japan Tr. by Robert H. Brower:" I shall miss you most, When twilight brings the rising mists, To hang upon the reeds, And as the evening darkens cold, With mallards’ cries across the marsh." This haiku's lyrical appeal and tenderness were the two main aspects that won my heart completely in my search for the triptych's second short poem. The third, decisive element that led me to choose this poem among many beautiful Ancient Japanese verses was the powerful message of hope and harmonious relations between people that Anonymous sent to us through the centuries, which, in turn, helped achieve a thematical balance between the content of "I shall miss you most...: and "The Road".
